Catherine -- Google 'may pull out of China after Gmail cyber attack'

This news mainly tells about that Google said they might close Google.cn and their office in China. The reason provided by Google was that the email accounts of Chinese human rights activists have suffered from cyber attack originating from China. However, there are also other opinions that Google’s pull-out of China is for financial reasons. This kind of opinion makes sense. Google is the first search engine in most markets while it comes second in China following Baidu. The profit made in China may be not satisfactory to Google company. Apart from the two reasons above, Google are having some problems about copyright with some Chinese writers. All these issues that Google face make the ‘pull-out’ not only seem as alarmism.

From my point of view, Google’s pull-out of China doesn’t seem as a wise choice. First of all, if Google pulls out of China, they should deal with many problems such as the employees in Google China company. In addition, they are giving up a developing market with huge potential. China has the largest number of Netizens in the world. As a professional search engine, Google should have the confidence that it will become popular and cannot be replaced among Chinese Netizens. Last but not least, Google aims at becoming an international search engine. If they do not take China which is a rapidly-developing country into consideration, this long-term goal may not be accomplished. If Google really gives up China, I’m sure that many Google users in China will be very disappointed, and it will definitely be a loss towards Chinese Netizens.

  2. I strongly agree with you.
As far as I know, google is much more professional in searching technical issues and literature. It is very important to the elites. Now they are unconfortable because they got used to google. In addition, google had provided some unique convenience such as 'google earth'. Lots of Chinese Netizens relied on them. Lastly, Google's goal is to become the world's computers, and finally become artificial intelligence. In order to complete objectives, google should try to get a large number of Chinese Netizens.

  3. . I agree with your viewpoint. Firstly, it would be a great lose to google and also Chinese netizens. It seems that google has many problems to do with in China, such as copyright and hacking attacks, however, google and Chinese government cannot achieve consensus out of conflict because the strict censorship. Google has a great number of Chinese users even if google only ranks as the second search engine in China. It may not be a wise decision to pull out of China even if the officials did make it after weighing the advantages and disadvantages.
Or maybe it is the situations that forced they to do this decision disregarding the efforts that the staffs in China office put in to build up google.cn. Compared with the would-be-affected Chines netizens, I think more attention should be pay to those who built up google.cn. It is undoubtly a great strike for them and it also a problem to rearrange their work.
From these above, we can understand why many netizens scold google is blinded by greed. However, think about it from another side, why more people scold google than Chinese government concerning this issue. It is also a key factor that Chinese government has been holding its ground. Maybe China should start to consider loosen the censorship, and do not make the netizens in a state of extreme nervousness. -------Yang Yu(Erika)
