Taxpayers should not fund the policing of casinos

This forum mainly discusses whether it is proper to set up the police unit to deal with the crimes in casinos using the taxpayers’ money.

In my own opinion, the government can adopt some measurement to support, and maybe influence in the future, the police unit in casinos instead of totally taking charge of it. It is inevitable that the build-up of casinos will arouse a lot of crimes such as fraud; and as profit-oriented organizations, such behaviors will definitely decrease their credibility and consequently casinos will lose the public interest, not to mention, profit. Although casinos are private properties, normally, they should mind their own business and cope with such issues; but on the other hand, they will bring huge benefit to Singapore, tourism, for example, is one of the influenced industries. In addition, the rise of casinos will cause chaos if the crimes are not dealt well with; and there is no doubt that keeping the society in order is the obligation that Singapore government has.

So, the government should encourage the formation of the police unit in casinos and adopt corresponding measures such as training the police to be specialists in dealing deception, for there has never appeared casinos in Singapore before and the police are not equipped with relevant knowledge. As for the fund, the owners of the casinos should pay for their own properties; after all, they have the capacity, and responsibility.

You might want to see how you can improve the start of your response. It is important to state the letter referred to, to identify the previous writer and his/her views, and to express your views in relation to that writer.

  2. I do not think the expenses of police units in the casinos will not paid by taxpayers of Singapore. Singapore government decides to build the high-class casino in order to stimulate consumption. The casino will attract thousands of rich people to Singapore. It will bring billions of income. Only a minute part of it will be enough to pay the police spending.

I think what we need to concern more about is the social problem. Such as addiction of gamble, gang problem and so on. The different admission of foreigners and natives is much more like propagation. I think what our mathematics lecturer makes fun of is a feasible and effective. The government should popularize the basic knowledge of possibility which will reveal essence of gamble. More moral education is essential for all the Singaporeans before the casinos bring harm to the society. (By Harry)

  3. When I read the forum letter, I feel a little ridiculous for the idea of the author. I agree with you on this issue. Although the casino is not popular for most of the Singaporeans to visit, the influences it may bring will be related to every citizen. Firstly, casinos may have a positive effect on tourism. And the booming tourism will bring a lot of profit for the country, which will finally benefit the citizens. Secondly, if the crime in casinos cannot be prevented seriously, the crime and problem will not only exist inside the casino. If someone is cheated by frauds in the casino and has a heavy loss, the victim might be quite desperate which may result in other kinds of crimes. In a word, the stability of every corner in the nation will lead to a harmony society, while any potential problem that the government did not pay attention to may results in the chaos of the society some day. Hence, I strongly support the action of Singapore’s government taken on this issue. And I think the citizens should have a long-range view to think over this problem, but not give thought to personal gain and loss.

  4. I agree with you that Singapore government should take actions against casino crime. However, I think it is alright for the taxpayers to pay the fund.

First of all, casino crime can bring problems outside the casinos. I understand that you thiught the casinos should take care of themselves. But there are a problems they are not able to deal with. For instance, the crime inside the casinos can result in crime outside casinos among gamblers. These crime can affect many other people in the society. In addition, things like addiction to gambling are social problems. The casinos do not have such strength to solve such problems. Last but not least, the Singapore government build the casinos to attract tourists, thus buzz the economy. This will definately benefit all the citizens so that it is reasonable for the taxpayers to pay for the fund.
