15th, Jan. Draco -- Scaling the Digital Wall in China

For the sake of censorship, Chinese government set up a Great Firewall to keep citizens away from many wide-open web sites like Youtube Twitter and Facebook which are all considered to be dangerous. However, the digital wall hasn’t shown much positive effects as anticipated because many tools like AnchorFree have been produced to “shield” individuals and thus evade the wall successfully.
Along with some other reasons, this kind of blocking by government urges Google to make decision to pull out Google.cn, which would mean Internet in China becoming isolated from the world.
My advice to government is to tear down this virtual wall and there are two reasons. Firstly, no matter how great the wall is, there will always be some evaders, and these evaders could result in a larger group of evaders. When the wall becomes stronger, the number of evader decreases, then grows again…This vicious circle is actually a virtual battle between citizens and the gov. which would ultimately result in dissatisfaction. Secondly, the digital wall shows a non-welcoming attitude to the western world and this is obviously against China's basic policy – “reform and open”. Besides, misunderstanding in a long term between China and the western world will come into being and China would suffer a heavier pressure from international opinion this way.

  1. This.....Great Firewall(GFW).....if you want to censor some sensitive topics, then doing it on the Internet would be bottom of the list...at least this is what I think. It`s too hard to block information on Internet. Today xxx is blocked, then tomorrow may be yyy comes out again with similar information.....Anyway, the readers should be really aware of rights and wrongs, especially with the info from the Internet.

  3. Sonia: in my viewpoint, this kind of blocking is still needed for the sake of internet users protection. of course, it may not be that helful just as what you said. i agree with hawk, personal awareness should be crucial when people are in face of the inundant infomation online. however, for the immature teenagers, they may not have that explicit sense to judge rights and wrongs. they are more prone to make mistakes and go astray.in order to protect them from unhealthy infomation as much as possible, we should upgrade our blocking technology from time to time.

I don't think this action is totally negative.
Firstly, Google does provide links to illegal websites like porn websites, which do harm to the mental health of young people.Secondly, with the drawing back from Chinese market Google will lose much much much more compare to cooperate with Chinese government. It is impossible that they didn't know before they did so. However, why do they insistto do so? Is it to show the Google Spirit that they will never compromise to any government? However,we all know Google has a really firm relationship with Singarporen government and block everything against the government of Singarpore. In addition, chinese government did not force them to do so. I think there must be some known reason that made Google willing to lose China, one of the biggest market in the world. Thirdly, I don't think these "sheilding policy" is permanent. It may just work as lube to lubricaten this difficult period for chinese government. Forthly, I hope the government of China find that objective and honest explanations to the political rumours or scandals will be more effective than blocking
